Was ist bonndata?

The University of Bonn Research Data Repository
Publish, preserve and increase the visibility of research data with bonndata
bonndata is the institutional, cross-disciplinary research data repository of the University of Bonn. It enables researchers to publish digital research data professionally, preserve access to their data and make datasets citable as independent research outputs.
The service is hosted entirely on the local infrastructure of the University IT and Data Center and is maintained by the Research Data Service Center. The repository is based on the established Dataverse software.
What is bonndata?
bonndata is intended for publishing research data that usually originates from completed academic or scientific projects and studies. Such data may include measurements, observations, survey results, tables, images, audiovisual material, software, source code, models, simulation results or supplementary material associated with a scholarly publication.
Publishing data in bonndata makes research outputs discoverable and citable independently of a conventional text publication. This increases the visibility of the data and supports the traceability, reproducibility and transparency of research results. Where appropriate, published datasets can also be reused by other researchers to verify existing findings or address new research questions.
bonndata is not a platform for publishing scholarly texts such as journal articles, dissertations or monographs. These publications can be made available through the University of Bonn publication server bonndoc.
Benefits of publishing research data in bonndata
- Long-term discoverability: Published datasets are described with meaningful metadata and can be found through the repository, search engines and scholarly discovery services.
- Persistent citation: Every published research dataset is assigned a Digital Object Identifier, or DOI. The DOI allows the dataset to be referenced unambiguously in journal articles, project reports and other scholarly outputs.
- International visibility: A dedicated DataCite record is created for published datasets, helping users around the world discover and identify the research data.
- Support for the FAIR principles: bonndata supports publication in accordance with the FAIR principles, which aim to make research data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.
- Flexible access arrangements: Data can be made openly available or, where justified by legal, contractual, ethical or disciplinary requirements, provided with appropriate access restrictions.
- Clear conditions for reuse: Defined terms of use make it transparent whether and under which conditions third parties may view, download and reuse the data.
- Professional support: The Research Data Service Center advises researchers on data structure, documentation, metadata, access conditions and preparation for publication.
- Free service: Publishing research data in bonndata is free of charge for researchers at the University of Bonn.
- Flexible data volumes: The service can accommodate datasets of different sizes. Researchers planning to publish particularly large or technically complex datasets should contact the Research Data Service Center at an early stage.
Who can use bonndata?
bonndata is available to researchers from all disciplines at the University of Bonn. Researchers sign in using their personal University ID and can then create, upload and describe their own datasets.
External project partners and visiting researchers without a University ID can browse published content and, depending on the relevant access conditions, download files. However, users without a University ID cannot publish datasets independently through the service.
How does the publication process work?
- Sign in: Researchers access bonndata using their University ID.
- Create a dataset: After signing in, a new dataset can be created within an appropriate bonndata collection.
- Upload the files: Researchers upload the data together with the documentation required to understand and reuse it. A clear README file and information about file formats, methods and data structures are particularly helpful.
- Enter the metadata: Information such as the title, authors, description, period of data collection, discipline, keywords, funding information and terms of use is recorded.
- Define access conditions: Researchers specify whether files can be openly accessible or whether justified access restrictions are necessary.
- Submit the dataset: The prepared dataset is submitted for publication. The Research Data Service Center provides assistance with questions and supports the publication and quality-assurance process.
- Publish and cite: Once the publication process has been completed, the dataset is released and assigned a DOI. The recommended citation can then be included in journal articles, reports, project websites and other scholarly publications.
Research data and the FAIR principles
The FAIR principles describe key requirements for well-documented and reusable research data:
- Findable
- Meaningful metadata and a persistent DOI make it easier to discover and unambiguously identify a dataset.
- Accessible
- Data and metadata are made available through a reliable repository. Controlled access can be implemented where restrictions are necessary.
- Interoperable
- Structured and, wherever possible, standardized descriptions support machine processing and connections with other research information.
- Reusable
- Clear documentation, information about how the data was created and transparent terms of use enable appropriate reuse in new research contexts.
Advice and support
The Research Data Service Center assists researchers with preparing datasets, selecting appropriate metadata, documenting files, defining access conditions and completing the publication process. Introductory sessions on using the repository can also be arranged upon request.
For a smooth publication process, questions concerning data organization, file formats, documentation and legal requirements should ideally be addressed before the end of the research project.

Expected crawler behaviour
Use a stable, truthful User-Agent with product/version and a working contact URL. Across all IP addresses and HTTP connections used by one crawler identity, allow no more than 5 requests in flight and wait at least 20 seconds between request starts. Crawl URLs listed in the catalog sitemap, including file pages and download URLs when they are published, use conditional requests, honor Retry-After, and apply exponential backoff after errors.
The welcome page may link to the interactive repository for human navigation. Automated clients must not treat that human link as a catalog crawl target.
Read the live machine-readable crawler policy before and during a crawl. Stop crawling when it reports CPU or memory utilization at or above 80% and 80% respectively.
