This file was generated on 2026-03-16 by MAXIMILIAN ROSENTHAL A GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Title of the dataset: "Vernetzung und Verflechtung. J. Rieter-Biedermann auf dem internationalen Musikalienmarkt" 2. Brief description of the research project and its aims: In the project "Geschmacksbildung und Verlagspolitik" (2020-2023), ca. 12.000 entries of time series data from the print run ledgers of 19th- and 20th-century music publishers were collected for the purpose of investigating music history through quantitative data. For the first time, the project made it possible to trace large-scale popularity developments of 19th- and early 20th-century music. The data and further descriptions of the project are available at https://musikverlage.slub-dresden.de. Results from the project are forthcoming. For this paper, a specific subsection of the data from publisher J. Rieter-Biedermann (Winterthur/Leipzig 1856-1917) was used. It was complemented by company letters and sheet music to investigate how their publishing catalogue and economic activities position themselves in the growing international music market. The results suggest that Rieter-Biedermann managed to find their niche despite their relative smallness, and that the works of Johannes Brahms licensed under their name contributed strongly to their confident position on the international market. 3. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Original data set was collected and annotated by hand from the manuscript sources in the Saxon State Archive, dividing labour between librarians (authority data annotation) and musicologists (print run data collection). Annotations followed the GND authority file ontology and were applied so as to make print run informations of individual music editions processable in the context of music history. Annotation of edition entities therefore included information on composers and works, and related subfields according to the GND authority file (with project-specific modifications), see book of codes below (E_1). The complete data was then drawn from the database https://musikverlage.slub-dresden.de via API, processed further via R (no documentation as of 2026-01-21), and reuploaded to the database. This processed dataset was used in the context of this publication. 2. Methods for processing the data: Submitted data was generated from the data set via the R script (4), see B.1. 3. Instrument- and/or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: For the R script used, R/RStudio are required, with the following packages installed: pacman, tidyverse, tidyr, dplyr, ggplot2, lubridate, rio, magrittr, stringi, scales. 4. People involved in sample collection, processing, analysis and/or submission: Original data set contributors: Dr. Maximilian Rosenthal, University of Music Leipzig/University of Bonn Matthias Richter, M.A., Saxon State Library Dresden Katrin Bicher, M.A., Saxon State Library Dresden Dr. Christopher Klatt, University of Music Weimar/University of Music Leipzig Josias Rey (Schill), B.A., University of Leipzig Elisabeth Posniakow, M.A., University of Music Leipzig Svenja Rademacher, B.A., University of Music Leipzig Linda Deckbar, B.A., University of Leipzig 5. Describe any quality-assurance procedures performed on the data: - standardized vocabulary from the GND authority file (GND authority data ontology, https://d-nb.info/standards/elementset/gnd_20251216) - transparent documentation of collection process - quality indications on legibility and certainty by data collectors - internal quality indicators, depending on the degree of data enrichment and proofreading (not in the dataset) - semi-automated proofreading before data processing 6. Standards and calibration information: - standardized vocabulary (GND authority data ontology, https://d-nb.info/standards/elementset/gnd_20251216) ######################### E_1 DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR: master_2.csv Includes print run data for >12.000 editions, annotated with details on works contained, composers/editors involved, publication format and more; see ReadMe_and_Book_of_Codes.txt provided at https://musikverlage.slub-dresden.de/dokumente.
