This model was developed by the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M). ICON is currently used operationally at DWD for weather forecasting and it is now open source (https://www.icon-model.org/)

Studies on irrigation within Earth system models have demonstrated the irrigation effects on various variables. While some regional simulations in Europe have focused on short-term impacts during a single growing season, comprehensive long-term simulations across the entire continent are lacking. Our study aims to quantify the long-term impact of irrigation on surface and atmospheric variables over the EURO-CORDEX domain using convection-permitting ICON simulations that cover a period of 12 years. The control (no irrigation) and irrigation experiments used the current namelist for a simulation spanning from 2010 to 2022.
